Encouragement from Small Fish

Dear Lee:

Thank you for sharing your experience with us!

It feels like a very long time ago when I walked into your first class during Model School. You struck me as a driven and confident young man. I thought to myself what a good potential candidate for a couple of Sichuan schools, including the one you are serving in. I also recall when you asked why you were placed at this college, and to which I answered because I believed you have the right qualities, namely your youthful energy and purposefulness. As you’ve observed that student apathy is of a major concern and a challenge to teachers and administrators. I believed in it then, and I believe in it now, that you are the right person for this job. The way you conduct yourself and the time your spent preparing for classes, in spite of all the challenges, showed seriousness of your intent to help your students learning English, but even more importantly, it shows that you care! When students believe that their teacher care about them, they begin to change their attitude. Luis noticed that change during his recent visit. I also picked up bits of pride in your voice when you were in my office.

I would also like to encourage you to do more projects with your students in your community. We are lucky to have such a supportive Waiban as yours. And I know that they would like to see more secondary activities facilitated by PCVs.

Keep up with the good work! I look forward to hearing from you.

Good luck and have fun
