Because sometimes you meet someone so ignorant it is worth writing down.

J: Where are you from?
South Africa
J: Oh ok but which country in Africa are you from?
South Africa 5 minutes later….
J: Yea so you said you were from south Africa, but never told me which country
You know South Africa is a country, right?
J: Of course I know that! I have friends from South Africa but they’re all white

The following is a conversation I was unfortunate enough to have with J.

Me: I’ve never seen a Star Wars movie
J: How can you call yourself an American??!?
Me: Well I call myself a Jamaican American. Ha. Ha.
J: Jamaican American? Come on what’s that! It’s like saying African American! What is an African American? I never got people who called themselves that. What do you mean African American? Asians don’t just say Asian American! They say Chinese, Japanese or whatever they are! Why don’t these people know where they’re from?
Me:There is actually a very simple explanation for that
J: Yea yea but it just doesn’t make sense to me
M: Hey guys how about we change the subject? (I like M. He doesn’t sugar coat things)

Oh and J is not Chinese, he’s an old, white-American, but that’s obvious, isn’t it? He also believes that it’s his 60yr old Chinese father-in-laws responsibility to learn English so they can communicate rather than he learn Chinese (despite having lived here for 9 years.
